The interior of the Pharmacy U červeného raka underwent a cleansing – not only in terms of construction, layout and material solutions, but also in the very atmosphere of the space. In the building, which is located in the historical center of the Old Town of Bratislava, the primary goal was to create a new vibrant place. The building itself, in which the interior is located, also has historical value, with which the design tried to work very sensitively.
Its aesthetics should be consistent with modern exhibition spaces, while still retaining the historical context that is essential in this environment. Before the reconstruction, the exhibition of the pharmaceutical museum was made available in the given spaces. After the reconstruction, the new interior is closely related to the Michael’s Tower in terms of content and operation, to which it acts as a kind of entrance space. Among other things, it revives the exhibition of pharmaceutical furniture, complements the Michael’s Tower exhibition and provides visitor services for the public.
The design works with several distinctive elements in the form of central counters, which appear across the three main spaces. The counters are distinctive not only in shape but also in material, thus intuitively navigating the visitor across the space. They become a visual accent that adds dynamics to the space. The dominant material of the entire interior is copper in its natural form, which refers to the reconstructed St. Michael’s Tower in its materiality. The additional material is stainless steel with a special brushed finish, which puristically fills the vaulted openings or appears on other furnishings. The overall color palette of furniture, interior elements and surfaces is carried in a range of warm shades of gray to white, creating a harmonious background for the metal, almost sculptural elements of the interior. As a whole, an elegant and timeless environment is created here for the museum’s exhibition and work spaces.
