Hotel Morava

The Architekti Šebo Lichý (ASL) studio, in collaboration with GRAU, is behind the renovation of the Morava Health Resort in Tatranská Lomnica, an iconic functionalist building designed by Bohuslav Fuchs in 1933, which respects history while also moving it forward. The project restores the cultural and historical context of this legendary symbol of Tatra recreation while using contemporary methods to renovate the protected architectural structure.

The renovation removes haphazard alterations to the facades and interiors from recent decades and restores the building’s original elegance and aesthetics. The ASL architectural team built upon Fuchs’s interwar functionalism with its characteristic emphasis on “hygienic” architecture, sports, and a healthy lifestyle. In this spirit, the basement spaces of the former kitchen and boiler room were converted into a year-round wellness center, ski storage, and bicycle rental.

The hotel’s social area regained its original geometry, the color scheme of the glazing, and the proportions of the outdoor terraces. Guests also gained access to the rooftop terrace, featuring a preserved pavilion and a restored red “MORAVA” sign. In the guest rooms, glass partitions between the bathroom and the bedroom create greater transparency and a connection to the balcony terrace.
