Petržalka Central Development Axis
To solve the unique situation where a city with a population of one hundred thousand has free space instead of a complete centre, there is a whole range of opinions, bounded by two extremes: a four lane motorway destroying any hope for urbanity on the one hand, and the status quo, or a park, on the other. It is crucial to not succumb to hysteria on both sides and the main goal is to turn a housing estate into a city.
Petržalka currently functions as a mono-functionally constructed hibernating housing estate without a hierarchy, in the form of a sort of provisional situation. It primarily needs living public urban spaces, identification, and orientation. These attributes will be achieved by a complete mix of all the functions of urban life – not just traffic and greenery, a quality solution of which should be a matter of course. It is not necessary to create a continuous traffic connection through this space, Petržalka has a complete bypass and some good transversal roads, we focus on (forms of) communication that do not divide but connect.
We propose a range of spatial solutions depending on the specific location and its character.
